Portmagee 9 Irish Whiskey
Portmagee 9 Irish Whiskey is a blend of thirteen-year-old single malt and nine-year-old single grain Irish whiskey. It is currently the only Nine Year Old Irish Whiskey on the market.
We have sourced the whiskeys used in this super-premium Irish Whiskey blend from John Teeling’s Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk, as our own Portmagee Distillery building does not commence until early in 2020.
We found a quite incredible 9-year-old single grain whiskey to use as the foundation spirit for our blend and paired it with a 13-year-old single malt from the same warehouse. Both of these whiskeys would have been distilled originally in Cooley Distillery under Master Distiller Noel Sweeney who now leads Powerscourt Distillery.
Nine and three are special numbers in Irish whiskey as
- There are three types of Irish Whiskey.
- Irish Whiskey must be aged for three years to be called whiskey
- All Portmagee whiskey is triple distilled.
So three threes or nine conspired to lead us to blending a quite unique, nine year old Irish Whiskey. The Seine Boat which adorns our Portmagee brand and label is very much associated with Portmagee and South Kerry and there are thirteen crew in a Seine Boat.
Hence a blend of nine and thirteen-year-old whiskeys for our flagship Portmagee 9 Whiskey.
Our whiskey blender Stuart McNamara spent over six months developing our own unique whiskey style which is blended, married and finished in individual Barbados Rum Casks in homage to Captain Theobald Magee, the 17th century smuggler who gave his name to his homeport of Portmagee.
An interesting aside is that Captain Magee (like our current whiskeys) also came to Portmagee from Ireland’s North West as he fled South to Kerry after fighting on the losing Jacobean side in the Battle of the Boyne.
The additional time marrying and finishing in individual Barbados Rum Casks brought a wonderful warmth and elegance to the blend, in particular on the nose and finish. The grain component played a major role in this as it allowed the rum cask influence to shine through. Stuart then added the thirteen-year-old Single Malt to give further depth and character to the blend, stopping short of where the robust Malt flavours could dilute the amazing Barbados Rum Cask influence.
Portmagee 9 Irish Whiskey is unique in several other ways.
- Triple Distilled. Blended Married and Finished in individual Barbados Rum Casks.
- Although bottled at 40% ABV, Portmagee 9 is Non Chill-Filtered to retain full flavour.
- There is no added colouring in any Portmagee Whiskey making us quite unique in the whiskey world.
- Portmagee 9 is released one cask at a time with just 333 individually numbered bottles per release.
